Bridging Waiwai Across Islands

Hawaiʻi Technology Academy’s HCYP project focused on expanding student voice, strengthening cross-campus relationships, and creating opportunities for student-led service learning across its statewide network of campuses. Recognizing that HTA’s unique strength is its geographic reach across multiple islands, students explored how philanthropy and waiwai mapping could help build stronger connections between campuses and create a deeper sense of belonging among students who may rarely interact in person. Through activities such as waiwai walks, collaborative workshops, “Pep Club” and “Pep Class” gatherings, and cross-campus discussions, students reflected on what conditions help young people feel motivated, supported, safe, and empowered within their school communities. 

A major component of the project was the “Elevate Every Voice” initiative, which invited students across Kauaʻi, Maui, Kona, and Oʻahu campuses to identify and map the unique waiwai present within their communities and schools. Students highlighted physical spaces, cultural practices, relationships, programs, and opportunities that contribute to their sense of connection and well-being, while also engaging in conversations about student leadership, collaboration, and the importance of designing learning spaces where all voices feel valued. Throughout the process, HTA students emphasized that philanthropy is not only about service projects, but also about intentionally creating environments rooted in care, creativity, inclusion, and pilina across communities separated by geography but connected through shared purpose.
